Fed:Dumping migration bill leaves backdoors open to threat
CANBERRA, Aug 15 AAP - Liberal backbencher Warren Entsch says the dumping of tough
immigration laws left Australians living in remote areas open to disease and security
problems.
"They (Australians) could wake up in the middle of the night with total strangers standing
on their back doors with no health checks, no background checks whatsoever," Mr Entsch
told reporters.
"(It) puts them and their families at risk so, yes, for that reason I am certainly disappointed."
He said the dumping of the legislation showed Liberal Party members were free to vote
as they wanted.
The changes would have seen illegal refugees arriving on the mainland by boat forced
into offshore processing centres.
Prime Minister John Howard yesterday withdrew the bill from the Senate after he realised
it would be defeated.
