SA: Jobless rate has big fall in SA

The South Australian government has cautiously welcomed a huge drop in the state's
unemployment rate.

March figures released today show a seasonal unemployment rate of 7.9 per cent, down
0.8 percentage points on the previous month.

Employment Minister MARK BRINDAL says South Australia is the only state to experience
a fall in unemployment, while total employment at the moment is the highest in the state's
history.

However, though the improved figures appear to be built on good economic growth, he
says they need to be treated with caution.

The state's youth unemployment fell from 32.5 per cent to 30 per cent, but it is still
a major concern.

Mr BRINDAL is worried about the ageing population and says not enough is being done
for young people to fill the gap in the workforce.
